For a moment they waited until. as before. the voice of the adjutant was heard. clear and commanding. above the clamor.

They stood near the regimental adjutant. and seemed to be reporting their presence to him.

To do him justice. the colonel laughed at the notion. even when it was put forward by his much-trusted adjutant.

Why he went himself. and did not send one of his adjutants with a written protest. seems still very strange to us.
